Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi Road Closed at km 26 Since 6 October After Rockfall: No Reopening Date
What Changed

Before: the road over the Gombori Pass was open and was the shortest way from Tbilisi to Telavi. Now: the section at km 26 is closed to all vehicles, and the other main route runs through Sagarejo and Gurjaani.

The Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi road has been closed to all vehicles at km 26 since 6 October after a rock mass fell onto the carriageway. On 7 October the section was still closed, the Roads Department of Georgia reports.

What is known about the closure

  • Road: Vaziani-Gombori-Telavi, over the Gombori Pass
  • Closed section: km 26
  • Closed since: 6 October 2026
  • Restriction: all types of vehicles
  • Reopening: no date announced

Road crews and the contractor are on site with special machinery and are working at an intensive pace to restore traffic as soon as possible, according to the department. It has not said how long the clearing will take.

How to get to Telavi now

The Gombori road is the shortest route from Tbilisi to Telavi and the rest of Kakheti. The department has not announced a detour. The other main road to Telavi runs through Sagarejo and Gurjaani; it is longer, so allow extra time.

If you are renting a car in Georgia for a trip to Kakheti, plan the route through Sagarejo until the road reopens. If you travel by intercity minibus (marshrutka) in Georgia, check the route and travel time at the station before departure.

What happens next

Rockfalls and landslides are a known road risk in Georgia, especially on mountain roads. The department has announced a tender for full rehabilitation of a 26.5 km section of this road, including measures to stabilise the landslide stretch at km 26 for good.

The section will reopen once the rock mass is cleared and the slope is safe. No date has been given yet.
