Road to Omalo in Tusheti Closed on 4 October: Snow and Ice Shut km 22 to km 72
All traffic is banned on the km 22-72 section of the Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road because of heavy snow and ice. No reopening date has been announced.
On 3 October only km 39-45 was restricted. From 4 October the whole stretch from km 22 to km 72 is closed to all vehicles.
The Roads Department of Georgia has banned all motor traffic on the Pshaveli-Abano-Omalo road between km 22 and km 72 because of heavy snowfall and ice. Interpressnews and Timer reported the decision on 4 October. The first 22 km of the road remain open.
What is closed
- Closed section: km 22-72, all vehicles
- Open section: km 1-22
- Reason: heavy snow and ice
- Reopening date: not announced
On 3 October the department had restricted traffic on a shorter stretch, km 39-45. The road crosses the Abano Pass and is the way to Omalo in Tusheti.
What to do
If you planned a trip to Tusheti in the coming days, postpone it until the ban is lifted. Do not try to drive past the closed section: mountain roads in snow are among the main road risks in Georgia.
Early October snow is not unusual on high passes, and the weather in the Georgian mountains changes faster than in Tbilisi or Batumi.
If you booked a rental car in Georgia for this trip, ask the rental company about changing the dates. The Roads Department posts current restrictions on georoad.gov.ge, its hotline is 032 2 31 30 76.
